The draw between Palmeiras and San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires, in the first leg 💴 of the Libertadores Group stage, was marked by another episode of racism in the stands. After Joaquin Piquerez's goal gave 💴 Palmeiras a 1-1 draw at the Nuevo Gasometer Stadium, a San Lorenzo fan made monkey gestures towards the Brazilian team's 💴 supporters.
On social media, Palmeiras fans are demanding punishments for the new racist incident in the competition. Globe contacted Conmebol for 💴 an official statement, but no response has been received by the time of publication.
Neither club has commented on the matter 💴 so far. However, this is not the first incident in this edition of the Libertadores. In the match between Flamengo 💴 and Millonarios, also in the group stage, a Colombian fan made a racist gesture towards Flamengo players at the stadium 💴 in Bogota.
It's worth remembering that Alejandro Dominguez, president of Conmebol, guaranteed in an interview with journalist Monique Vilela last month 💴 that there will be a "zero tolerance" policy towards racism in the Libertadores and the Copa Sul-Americana. Dominguez said that 💴 tough measures will be taken against offenders.
"Zero tolerance for us. That's a very important issue for us, and it's not 💴 just about players in the Americas. It's about players from Africa and other parts of the world. The issue is 💴 important and we have to protect our players abroad as well," said Alejandro Dominguez.
In the match, Palmeiras, who left most 💴 of their starters in Sao Paulo and fielded an entire reserve team, managed to secure a draw against San Lorenzo 💴 in the first match of the Group F of the competition. Now, the Brazilian team is preparing to face Liverpool, 💴 from Uruguay, on Thursday, May 11, at the Allianz Parque.
